HEADACHE TYPES: WHAT DOES YOUR PAIN MEAN?

Headaches are one of the commonest medical ailments which are experienced by most people at some point in their life. Headaches occur regardless of age, race, gender etc. As per the WHO report, almost half the adults worldwide experience a headache every year.

Headaches can be a sign of emotional distress or stress or due to an underlying medical condition like migraine, anxiety, depression, or high blood pressure.

Types of Headache
Based on the type of your pain, the cause and type of the headache can be known.

1. Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are one of the commonest headaches and they are mild in nature. They appear and disappear suddenly and don’t cause much trouble. They come and go with time and can vary in intensity.

2. Migraine Headaches
Migraine headaches are severe in intensity and cause a lot of pounding and throbbing pain. Migraines usually last from a few hours to many days depending on the cause and intensity of the ache. Frequency is usually less but migraine headaches can occur at least 3-4 times per month. Along with pain, some individuals also complain of sensitivity to light, sound or smells, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, etc.

3. Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches as the name typically suggests, occurs in clusters. You may suffer from headache 3-4 times a day. Intense burning or piercing pain behind one eye or constant throbbing are classic features of cluster headaches. Each headache lasts for about 15 minutes to 3 hours depending on the intensity and severity.

4. Sinus Headaches
Sinus headaches give you a deep and constant pain in your forehead, cheekbones or on the bridge of your nose. The cavities in your head called sinuses get inflamed due to cold and infection leading to accumulation of mucus. Along with sinus symptoms, you will have a runny nose, ear fullness, fever, a swollen face, and a red nose. The sinus infection leads to a greenish or yellow discharge from your nose.

5. Hunger Headaches
Hunger headaches are commonly seen before mealtime. They are caused by muscle tension, lowered blood sugar and rebound dilation of the blood vessels along with overlapping or missing a meal. Daily dieting or skipping of meals can cause recurrent hunger headaches.


How to get rid of your headaches?
Based on the type of your headache, you must address the main cause of your headache.
